This is Das Bench, a year, in elapsed time, in the making. The top is based on Frank Klausz's cabinet maker bench but with a Veritas Twin Screw Vise on the right end.

The base for Das Bench was done first and took about 4 months - elapsed time, not actual building time. A lot of time was eaten up figuring out what I was going to do and how I was going to do it. Here's the base unit with graduated drawers- accessible from both sides of the bench. Making the "through drawers" was NOT TRIVIAL

Here's the top - the core is two layers of 1 3/4 inch maple. The rest is beech. Cutting through dovetails in 2 to 2 1/2" thick stock caused some delays in the bench construction - ended up having to buy a pair of PAX handsaws to do them as my dovetail saws couldn't cut deep enough. Did a lot of procrastinating and then a lot of practice cutting BIG dovetails on scrap before I did THE REAL THING - the apron stock was hard to come by and NOT CHEAP. Once I worked up the nerve/confidence to do the apron dovetails they were far easier to do than I'd thought.

And here they are together - with the Twin Screw Vise installed, dogholes, dogs and wooden screws.

There's a lot more (35 pages in fact) about building this bench ----->HERE<-------.
